CHANDIGARH, January 15: Melodious guitar notes and euphonious voices flooded the Panjab University Student Centre as South Korean students performed here today.Initially, for the thin gathering, unaware of the programme in advance, it was just another show by a couple of foreigners.
But they sat mesmerised as the artistes, in cheerful traditional dresses, created flowers and other forms with fluttering pink fans. "Bucha chum, is a traditional South Korean dance," explained one of the artistes.
However, a skit, depicting the crucification and resurrection of Christ, generated controversy amidst the students. "They are trying to convert people," alleged Uma Kant Mehta, president of Cultural Mafia, a students' organisation. "University campus should not have been used for propagating religion through cultural activities."
Munish Anand, president of PU Campus Students' Council added: "We were not aware that the Korean troupe, members of the Campus Crusade for Christ, was here to propagate a religion.
They were encouraged because we thought that they were here merely to entertain the students and ease the tense atmosphere."
Earlier, during the afternoon, they performed English songs, Korean dances, a few actions of Taekwondo.
