Business support for education good for all

The link between education and industry, which has been a pet seminar subject more than anything else, is gradually gaining corporate acceptance.

Chirayu R Amin, the newly elected president of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) India, speaks to Nivedita Mookerji on the topic.

  • How does ICC look at the links between education and industry?

The ICC has always held the opinion that there is a close linkage between education and business. Without updating the skills and knowledge in the areas of various developments taking place the world over, business cannot function properly. It is therefore of utmost importance that education receives top priority and business support. Governmental effort to make education relevant to business needs and requirements is also essential, so that education is of greater practical utility.

  • How different are the ICC views from those of the other chambers on the subject of education-business connection?

ICC lays more stress on education, which has a direct bearing on the day-to-day affairs of companies and businesses.

  • Does the international background of ICC help it achieve results in the field of education in business?

Yes, it does. It is the belief of ICC that business-relevant education is in the interest of the businesses themselves, as well as the country and the people. With that belief in mind, ICC has launched a number of activities that may not be called formal educational activities, but these help in furthering the above belief. With this end in view, ICC is imparting education on the use of various codes drawn up by it. These include those in the areas of trade terms, letter of credits, electronic commerce, working of chambers of commerce and other commercial and business-related subjects. These have become so popular that ICC has been encouraged to launch a certificate course in documentary credits. I am sure similar initiatives will be taken in other select areas also.

  • What steps will you take as the new president of ICC India to bring about a better relationship between educational institutions and business organisations?

As the new president of ICC India, I will establish contacts with educational institutions in the country and impress on them the need for launching programmes that have direct bearing on business operations. For instance, some of the subject matters of the ICC code could form part of our education curricula. Also, educational institutions can impart education in these specialised subjects.
