  Sonia dares Govt on Bofors papers
Setting the tone for an aggressive Congress campaign, Sonia Gandhi yesterday challenged the Union Government to make the Bofors papers public, to reveal the names of all those involved and ``take whatever action is required against them''.

Admitting a change in attitude, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet yesterday indicated that his party was keeping its options open on joining a United Front (UF) Government.

Kanshi may go in for alliances
Following the solid drubbing in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad elections, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Kanshi Ram may now be willing to go in for seat-sharing arrangements with other parties in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Free fall of rupee continues
The rupee continued its downward slide against the dollar and touched a new low of 40.35 before the Reserve Bank of India along with the State Bank of India (SBI) stepped in to pump in around $ 100 million to arrest the fall of the Indian currency. The rupee opened at 40.15/18 - at the same closing level of Wednesday's - but weakened as corporate demand for dollars went up.

UN attacks Iraq on signal from testy US
The United States on January 14 obtained a fresh unanimous denunciation of Iraq by the 15-member UN security council, but signalled that patience was running out. British and US ambassadors meanwhile expressed concern about allegations that Iraq had tested biological and chemical weapons on human guinea pigs, saying that the reports underscored the need for UN inspectors to have full access to sites.
Laloo's party pledges to fight graft
Making a mockery of corruption charges against its president, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Laloo Prasad Yadav, yesterday said it was totally committed to fighting corruption. The party however added a rider by asserting it was equally determined not to allow the issue of corruption to be used as an instrument of political vendetta.
