India, France sign pacts to combat terrorism, scams
India and France yesterday signed two agreements aimed at combating international terrorism, scams and other crimes and bringing fugitive offenders to justice. The agreements on mutual legal assistance in criminal and civil matters will enable India and France to combat crime and facilitate the bringing of fugitive offenders to justice. The agreement on mutual legal assistance in civil matters will provide a framework for transmission and serving of documents, obtaining of documents and recognition and enforcement of the substantial commercial and economic links between the two countries.

Piqued TN Janata Dal bids adieu to Front
With no word from the TMC or the DMK on allotment of seats to the Tamil Nadu unit of Janata Dal, the embittered State JD unit has decided to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections on its own. Pete Sampras reached the Australian Open quarter-final yesterday without losing a set, while the battle intensified for the women's title. The world number one fought his first tie-break of the week in his fourth round against Hicham Arazi of Morocco. According to Dr Robin Sengupta cerebral surgeon of New Castle General Hospital, UK feels that Indian neurosurgeons are comparable with the best in the world. However, they are hampered by lack of infrastructure and the requisite facilities. The surgeon feels this is an area in India where the government and the governed can contribute alike in terms of materials and education.

As India celebrates its Republic Day, President KR Narayanan has approved 322 defence decorations to Armed forces personnel in recognition of their gallantry and distinguished services. These consist of 24 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, 3 Kirti Chakras, 1 Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal, 42 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 2 Vir Chakras, 21 Shaurya Chakras, 71 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 6 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), 21 Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), 8 Nao Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), 14 Vayu Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty), 1 Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal, 103 Vishisht Seva Medals and 4 Mention-in-Despatch.
