Rain forces postponement of WSC final by a day

SYDNEY: The second match of the World Series limited overs final between Australia and South Africa was postponed today without a ball being bowled because of a waterlogged outfield.

The two teams will return to the Sydney Cricket Ground tomorrow to play the game, the second in the best-of-three final series.

Australia captain Steve Waugh said the conditions were unplayable after heavy overnight rain.

Although the rain stopped before the scheduled start of the day-night match, ground staff were unable to dry the outfield sufficiently before the umpires called off play at 6.30 p.m. local time. The third final match, if required, will be played in Sydney on Tuesday.

Holder serves notice with 183

KINGSTON: West Indies `A' captain Roland Holder put England's bowlers to the sword yesterday, carefully scoring a huge 183 as his team scored 411 for seven in their first innings.

England scored 400 for eight declared in their firstinnings.

Dropped from the Test side following a dismal performance during the tour of Pakistan, Holder applied himself diligently on a flat Chedwin Park track that contained little menace. He was dismissed after eight hours at the crease, facing 363 balls and scoring 27 fours.

Brief Scores: England 400-8 decl vs West Indies A 411-7 (K Semple 54, R Holder 183, R Hoyte 33, L Williams 50 n.o; Fraser 4-81, Tufnell 2-102)
