India fail to make it to final

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
DURBAN, JAN 29: India beat Pakistan by five wickets in their under-19 World Cup match here today, but it was not enough for them to reach Sunday's final in the three-week tournament.

India had to score runs at more than five an over to surpass England's superior run-rate in their Super League pool, but their hopes were raised briefly by a flurry of runs from captain Amit Pagnis (52) and Mohammed Kaif (53 not out).

Pakistan totalled 188 in 47 overs, while India had 191 for five in 40.1 overs -- a case for winning the battle, but not the war.

India's failure mainly meant South Africa are now likely to play England in the final -- the host nation should easily overcome Sri Lanka on Friday.

The Sri Lankans have had poor returns of their batting throughout the tournament. New Zealand currently have a better run-rate, but South Africa are confident of edging them out of a final berth.

Kiwis thrash Zimbabwe

New Zealand thrashed Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in a second-round match (Graeme Pollock Pool)of the under-19 World Cup at Springbok Park here on Wednesday.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 97 (Kyle Mills 4-32, James Franklin 4-20) lost to New Zealand 98-0 (James Marshall 39 not out, David Kelly 39 not out).
