Congress clears State pact with RPI, SP
The Congress on Saturday put the formal seal of approval on the seat adjustments undertaken with the Republican Party of India and the Samajwadi Party in Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar, flanked by SP and RPI leaders, announced that the two parties would contest four seats each while the Congress will put up candidates in the remaining 40.

Prime Minister I K Gujral urged voters to give the United Front (UF) another chance in the coming election for completing their unfinished economic and political agenda. RBI further eases NBFC norms
Under pressure from the non-banking finance company (NBFC) lobby, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reversed some of the stringent measures regarding deposit mobilisation and other norms regulating the sector. The RBI has announced that it will enhance the ceiling on quantum of public deposits as a multiple of net owned fund (NOF) in respect of equipment leasing and hire purchase finance companies.

Clinton may trip on Tripp's testimony
A grand jury investigating the President Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal has questioned the official who banished Lewinsky from the White House amid a new uproar over prosecutorial tactics. At the same time, one of the main figures in the scandal leveled a potentially damaging new allegation yesterday, saying she was present when Lewinsky, a former White House intern, received a late-night telephone call from Clinton.
