Hingis crushes Martinez
Martina Hingis became the youngest player of the open era to defend a Grand Slam singles title with a ruthless straight sets victory over Conchita Martinez in the Australian Open. Hingis claimed her fourth Grand Slam title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in one hour, 26 minutes.

Kramnik joins Anand in lead
Vladimir Kramnik of Russia joined Viswanathan Anand of India at the top of the table in the 60th Hoogovens Grandmasters Chess tournament with a comfortable win over Paul van der Sterren in the 12th and penultimate round. Anand who was pitted against Boris Gelfand drew the game. Both the players now have a tally of eight points.

Resuming on 269 for four, South Africa collapsed to 305 for seven and were eventually bowled out for 517. At the end of the day, Australia were one wicket down with a total score of 71 after facing 22 overs from the South Africans.

The West Indies Cricket Board took copious flak following the unprecedented abandonment of the first Test against England because of the dangers posed by the Sabina Park pitch in Kingston.
