Sensex up by 130 pts

MUMBAI: The spectacular recovery on various Asian stock markets recharged bulls on Indian markets with the 30-share Sensitive Index (Sensex) jumping by 130 points on Monday. Sensex spurted by nearly 4 per cent to close at 3,354.80 points as compared to Thursday's close of 3,224.36 points. The National Stock Exchange's 50-share index (Nifty) also gained 13.15 points to close at 976.60 points.

`Butcher' trial

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence awarded to the ``butcher'' of Trilokpuri, Kishori Lal by a trial court for his role in the 1984 riots. Kishori Lal, a butcher by profession, was sentenced to death in five different cases of murder of Sikhs during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

UP temple cases

VARANASI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh on Monday defended withdrawal of cases against those who were associated with Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid movement saying his government's action did not violate the ElectionCommission's model code of conduct. He said a temple devoted to Lord Ram would be constructed at the same site if the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power at the Centre.

CBI on Sukh Ram

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday submitted before a special court here that it has ``prima facie'' sufficient evidence to ``frame charges'' against former Communication Minister Sukh Ram, a former Department of Telecom (DOT) official and another accused in the telecom scam case.
