Security up in TN after verdict in Rajiv case

RAMANATHAPURAM, February 2: Security has been beefed up on the road and rail bridges connecting Mandapam and Rameswaram island in the wake of the announcement of death sentence for 26 accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case.

Ramanathapuram SP Kannappan has made arrangements for a round-the-clock vigil on the two bridges. He supervised the additional security arrangements on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu Special Police and reserve police personnel have been stationed on the bridges.

Additional police pickets have been posted at the Mandapam Refugee Camp. Visitors are allowed in the camp only after a check.

Walkie-talkies and other communication facilities have been provided to police personnel in coastal areas like Rameswaram, Pamban, Thangatchimadam and Mandapam. Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessels have been stationed in Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar.

Meanwhile, police got information that a couple in Ramanathapuram are supporting Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) activities. Police took Faruq (43) ofVelipattinam here and his wife Priya Faruq (35), both from Sri Lanka, to police station on Saturday and the SP conducted an inquiry. They were sent to the Special Refugee Camp in Chengalpattu district.
