Orissa demands additional para-military forces during polls

BHUBANESWAR, February 2: The Orissa Government has asked for an additional ten companies of para-military forces for the Lok Sabha elections compared to the security provided during the 1996 polls.

The Election Commission would consider the request and take up the matter with the Union Home Ministry, Election Commissioner G V G Krishnamurthy told newsmen here today.

During the last Parliamentary elections, a total of 27 companies of para-military forces had been deployed in the State for smooth conduct of the polls.

Krishnamurthy, who arrived here yesterday, reviewed the law and order situation in the State and the arrangements being made for holding the elections with the State's chief electoral officer, Ardhendu Sekhar Sarangi and senior State government officials including the Chief Secretary, Sudhanshu Bhushan Mishra and Director General of Police, Dr B B Panda this morning. He said the commission had already appointed 63 observers including 21 expenditure observers for monitoring the polls in theState.
