  MLAs force Vaghela to go back to Cong for alliance
Bowing to the demands of the majority of the 45-odd legislators of his Rashtriya Janata Party, Shankarsinh Vaghela did a volte-face yesterday on electoral ties with the Congress and initiated efforts to enter into some sort of tie-up with the party. Vaghela had snapped off ties with the Congress after the party offered him nine of the 16 Lok Sabha seats.

The perceptible increase in the mass base of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to result in a keen triangular fight in many constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, upsetting the calculations of both the principal parties -- the Congress and the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Almost all the previous elections in the state were a direct contest between the two major parties, except in one or two constituencies.

Badal rains down diatribe on Cong over Sonia issue
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Haryana counterpart Bansi Lal yesterday lashed out at the Congress for relying on a `foreigner' to campaign for it in the current Lok Sabha elections. The two leaders said that Sonia Gandhi was an Italian and it was a shame on the part of the Congress that it could not find any leader for the prime ministerial post.
Security up in TN after verdict in Rajiv case
Security has been beefed up on the road and rail bridges connecting Mandapam and Rameswaram island in the wake of the announcement of death sentence for 26 accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. Tamil Nadu Special Police and reserve police personnel have been stationed on the bridges while additional police pickets have been posted at the Mandapam Refugee Camp.

UF favours restoring of Masjid: Veerendrakumar
One of the leading lights of the Janata Dal, M P Veerendrakumar, expressing his views on the political scene says that the party is in favour of the Masjid being rebuilt where it was demolished. "It was my party's government which decided to quit on the issue of protection of the Babri Masjid when the then PM V P Singh stopped BJP leader L K Advani's Rath Yatra to Ayodhya. No one can accuse us of ditching the minorities or question our secular credentials", he says.
Now, Kenia moves to SP
Former Rajya Sabha (RS) member Chandrika Kenia has switched party loyalties yet again; this time to the Samajwadi Party (SP). After joining and deserting the Congress twice and the Shiv Sena once in a space of 12 years, Kenia announced her decision to hitch her political fortunes on to the SP bandwagon in the presence of Mumbai unit president Abu Asim Azmi and newly appointed Member of Legislative Council Hussain Dalwai.
