No special sops for union office bearers, says HC

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, Feb 9: In a significant judgement, Madras high court has held that trade union members not performing their duties could not claim the same benefits as those of employees, who were working for the industry. Mr Justice R Jayasimha Babu gave the ruling while dismissing as not maintainable a petition filed by the Anna Staff Union of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC), seeking an injunction to restrain the TNCSC from withdrawing the concessions granted to workmen, who were office bearers of trade unions, to have the benefit of attendance even without working.

The judge said no right could be claimed from the employer on the ground that the workmen have become office bearers of trade unions. He also made it clear that union work was not the same as performing the duty attached to the post to which the person was appointed.
