Saurashtra win by a whisker

MUMBAI, February 10: A thrilling two-run victory by Saurashtra over Vadodara at the Wankhede Stadium marked the opening day of the West Zone Inter-Association under-14 cricket tournament.

Hosts Mumbai, playing at the Elf-Vengsarkar Ground (Oval), had it far easier, cruising to a 75-run win over Gujarat.

Replying to Saurashtra's 200 for seven off 40 allotted overs, Vadodara were shot out for 198 with an over to go.

Left-handed batsman Tejasvi Singh hit a valliant 96 as Vadodara succumbed to the guiles of left-arm spinner Ajay Lalcheta who grabbed seven for 54.

Lalcheta's was an all-round display after scoring a useful 45 in Saurashtra's modest innings. Sagar Jogiyani (37) and Sandil Natkan (36) were the other principal scorers for Saurashtra.

Paul Velthaty hit 94 for Mumbai to help steer the hosts to a healthy 283 for six in the allotted 40 overs. Velthaty was assisted by Vinit Indulkar (53) and Sangram Bagul (51) as Mumbai ran up an imposing total.

Gujarat fell way short with 208 for eight despiteParthiv Patel's 92, restricted by left-arm spinner Mayank Dayal who returned four for 47.

Mumbai 283-6 in 40 overs (Soham Dalvi 32, Paul Velthaty 94, Vinit Indulkar 53, Sangram Bagul 51; Swapnil Patel 3-43) bt Gujarat 208-8 in 40 overs (Parthiv Patel 92; Mayank Dayal 4-47) by 75 runs.
