Woman, daughter killed at VP Road

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 13: A woman and her eight-year-old daughter were found murdered this afternoon at their V P Road residence in south Mumbai. Police suspect the killers were acquainted with the victims and that the double-murder took place around 11 am, half an hour after the woman's husband left the house. The bodies of Vimla Daga (40) and Pooja (8) were found in a pool of blood, their throats slit open. They were alone in their third-floor apartment when the murder took place. While Vimla's son had left for school early in the morning, her husband Premchand Daga had set out for work around 10.30 am. The murder came to light when the son returned from school around 12.30 pm to find his mother not answering the door-bell. He immediately called up his father Premchand, a dealer at Bombay Yarn Merchants Association, Mumbadevi. Premchand first sent two of his employees to assist the boy in opening the door, but soon joined them around 1.30 pm. They finally managed to open the door with a duplicate key, only tofind the bodies lying in a pool of blood.

Zone II assistant inspector of police Praful Bhosale suspects that the murderers were known to the family. He said tea-cups and plates full of snacks have been recovered from the living room, suggesting that somebody known to the family had visited the house after Premchand left in the morning. Premchand too in his statement confirmed that his wife would never open the door to a stranger and that serving such a person tea was completely out of question.

While police are not ruling out robbery as the motive, they refused to divulge details about the valuables or cash missing from the house. The zonal deputy commissioner of police, Param Bir Singh, when contacted said: ``A special team is working on some specific clues.'' The Dagas resided on the third floor of Mukund Mansion, which is barely 50 meters from the police station. The building has four apartments on each floor. Meanwhile, the secretary of the Bombay Yarn Merchants Association and Exchange Ashok Jainsaid that the business community was shocked by the ghastly murder and the alarming rise in crime in the city. The association has decided to keep the market closed on Saturday to protest against the murder.
