India spin Australia to doom
In the end, there was no last ditch fight, no Mackay-Kline last wicket partnership. Australia's resistance was passive on Tuesday and India, predictably enough, wrapped up the first Test at Chepauk by a comfortable margin of 179 runs. The last wicket fell 45 minutes before the scheduled tea interval and the result, incidentally, ended a 13-Test drought.

Anand is champion
Viswanathan Anand may have failed to win the World Chess Championships some weeks back but, on Monday night, he once again proved that he is, indeed, world champion material by winning the strongest tournament ever. The 28-year-old Indian Grandmaster, who peaked at the perfect time, drew with Vladimir Kramnik in 34 moves in the final round of the Category 21 Super Grandmasters tournament in Linares.

Graf zooms into last eight
Steffi Graf is back. Playing in just her second tournament and fourth match since undergoing knee surgery eight months ago, the 28-year-old Graf was in top form yesterday as she demolished Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the $ 1.25 million State Farm Evert Cup.

Rupali conquers Cook Strait
Indian teenager Rupali Repale successfully swam New Zealand's difficult Cook Strait yesterday but was taken immediately to hospital following the feat. The strait, 19 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, is swept by fierce tides and strong winds, swimmers can take all day and swim much further than the straight line distance.
