  India spin Australia to doom
In the end, there was no last ditch fight, no Mackay-Kline last wicket partnership. Australia's resistance was passive on Tuesday and India, predictably enough, wrapped up the first Test at Chepauk by a comfortable margin of 179 runs. The last wicket fell 45 minutes before the scheduled tea interval and the result, incidentally, ended a 13-Test drought.
  Anand is champion
Viswanathan Anand may have failed to win the World Chess Championships some weeks back but, on Monday night, he once again proved that he is, indeed, world champion material by winning the strongest tournament ever. The 28-year-old Indian Grandmaster, who peaked at the perfect time, drew with Vladimir Kramnik in 34 moves in the final round of the Category 21 Super Grandmasters tournament in Linares.

Graf zooms into last eight
Steffi Graf is back. Playing in just her second tournament and fourth match since undergoing knee surgery eight months ago, the 28-year-old Graf was in top form yesterday as she demolished Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the $ 1.25 million State Farm Evert Cup.
Rupali conquers Cook Strait
Indian teenager Rupali Repale successfully swam New Zealand's difficult Cook Strait yesterday but was taken immediately to hospital following the feat. The strait, 19 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, is swept by fierce tides and strong winds, swimmers can take all day and swim much further than the straight line distance.

South Africa, Pak share honours
South Africa wrapped up a 259-run win over Pakistan on the fifth day of the third Test match at St George's Park yesterday to earn a 1-1 share of the series. Pakistan started the final day in a hopeless situation at 120 for seven after being set 394 runs to win.
Kunte shocks Komliakov
Asian junior champion Abhijit Kunte of India played a masterly game in the sixth round to get the better of leader and GM Victor Komliakov of Moldova and surge into lead with 4.5 points in the Indian Independence Golden Jubilee GM Chess Tournament at Hotel Hyson Heritage yesterday. The win also helped Kunte get a good cushion in his quest of a GM norm as he has scored these points in the elite group of Grandmasters.
