NC changed tune overnight, says Congress

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
JAMMU, March 28: Senior leaders of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee charged the National Conference with indulging in ``political opportunism'' by deciding to abstain from voting on the confidence motion faced by the Vajpayee government.

``The NC and its leaders believe in political opportunism. It has no faith in its political ideology and can go to any extent for the sake of the power,'' said a joint statement issued by six senior Congress leaders criticising the NC's decision to abstain from voting and to extend issue-based support to the BJP-led government. The leaders called the change of stand ``a betrayal of the faith of the people of Jammu and Kashmir who believe in secular politics.''

The leaders said that BJP's stand on abrogation of Article 370, and ``anti-Muslim'' policies has been NC's frontal attack against BJP. ``The overnight change of tone by the NC for the sake of power was sheer political dishonesty and shallowness,'' the statement added.
