Attempt to harass Benazir, says lawyer

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
ISLAMABAD, March 28: Former Pakistani Premier Benazir Bhutto cannot be arrested and an arrest warrant against her is just another attempt to harass the Leader of the Opposition by the Nawaz Sharif regime, her lawyer claimed here today.

``The offence is bailable and there is no substance in the charge,'' Bhutto's lawyer Babar Awan told reporters.

The Sindh Ehtesab (accountability) Bench yesterday issued bailable arrest warrants against Bhutto and several others for allegedly making illegal appointments in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) during her regime, and asked her to appear before the Bench on April 24.

Awan said the warrant had been issued under Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Code, ``in which an arrest is not required''.

He, however, alleged that through such moves the Government simply wanted to harass Pakistan People's Party leader Bhutto, currently in Dubai.
