  Ex-Minister seeks PCC chief's resignation over Deb's defeat
Former Union Minister and outgoing Congress member of the Rajya Sabha from Assam, Matang Singh on Friday urged party president Sonia Gandhi to immediately dismiss Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Tarun Gogoi for Santosh Mohan Deb's defeat in the Rajya Sabha polls. After the Rajya Sabha's declaration of election results, Singh told The Indian Express that Gogoi, as the APCC chief owed moral responsibility and should immediately resign.
  100 kg explosive haul in Chennai
The Chennai police recovered 100 kg of explosives from a house in the Arumbakkam area and arrested the owner of the house, Fathima Beevi, her husband Abubacker, daughter Khader Beevi and son-in-law Syed Hussain in an early morning raid yesterday.

Terrorism, a political weapon
The police raids on the premises of some Islamic organisations here and the arrest of a few individuals, in the wake of the Coimbatore blasts, have once again raised the issue of terrorism as a political weapon. The United States has beefed up security at its high commissions in Pakistan following information of a ``possible threat'' against its diplomatic presence.

China yesterday disclosed that it executed a would-be assassin of late Communist party supremo, ``Chairman'' Mao Zedong, soon after he was captured in 1949. Releasing more details from its classified files on an attempted US-backed plot to assassinate China's top leaders the official Xinhua news agency said the would-be assassin, Duan Yunpeng, was arrested, following the assassination attempt in northeast China, and was later executed.
