BUCHAREST, March 31: Romania's embattled Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea resigned on Monday under increasing pressure from within his own government after charges of incompetence. Sources present at a closed-door cabinet session confirmed that the Prime Minister had announced his resignation to his ministers.Ciorbea was expected to make an official announcement later in a television address to the nation. President Emil Constantinescu was expected to accept the resignation. Ciorbea was bowing to widespread pressure to step down from within his coalition.
The premier, whose critics have flayed him for alleged incompetence and laxity, has been in trouble since not only his coalition partners but a dissident group within his own dominating Christian Democrats called for his departure.
