Israel plays down threat of clash with Washington

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
JERUSALEM, March 31: Israel played down the threat of a showdown with Washington today after US peace envoy Dennis Ross failed in his latest bid to broker a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. As Ross returned empty-handed to Washington following four days of shuttling between Israeli and Palestinian leaders, a US spokesman said the peace process was in ``dire straits'' and warned for the first time that the United States could ``disengage'' from its mediating role.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted there was no crisis while other Israeli officials blamed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for the stalemate.
