Acting time

Some good news for theatre enthusiasts. Awishkar, a non-profit making theatre group, will hold an acting-oriented theatre training workshop, conducted by Jayadev Hattangady. The workshop which is open only to 18 year olds and above will be held in English, Hindi and Marathi.

The participants will be made aware of their mental and physical blocks, thus easing out the acting process. And exposed to a method of working that will come from being apprised of the analytical and creative process of acting. "This is a practical workshop that concentrates on acting. They will be taught how to analyse a play or how to approach a character," says Hattangady, who is the honourary joint secretary of Awishkar.

Epic songs

Lilette Dubey's Jaya is a musical montage of the greatest Indian epic, The Mahabharata. An operatic version inEnglish, the play has some good live singing by actors such as Nandu Bhende, Devika Bhojwani, Vishal Dadlani, Asif Ali Beg and Jean Michael. It has been sponsored by BPL Mobile and after a few exclusive BPL shows, the production is now open to the public.

At Bandra Reclamation grounds on April 04 and 05, 1998. Time: 7.45 pm. Tickets ( between Rs 1,500 and Rs 100) are available at Rhythm House and the venue.

Time and again

Sonal Motla, who has organised shows such as State Of The Art -- computer-aided paintings and Circling The Square, where leading contemporary painters designed their interpretations of furniture, has come up with another unusual show called Essays In Time. It is an exhibition of kinetic sculptures and works by various artists on the subject of time. The only brief that artists were given was -- do not design time pieces. This exhibition is a must-see.

At the Nehru Centre Art Gallery, Worli till April 12, 1997. Time: 11.00 am to 7.00pm.

Weaving ties

The British Council Division, British Deputy High Commission is organising an exhibition of two dimensional and three dimensional Textile Images by Nita and Jaidev Thakore. This exhibition is an attempt to establish meaningful connections between the textile art movements, in India and in the West.

At the Jehangir Art Gallery till April 07, 1998. Time: 11.00 am to 7.00 pm.

Water world

An exhibition by the famous water-colour artist Paresh Maity is starting early next week. This 33-year-old Delhi based painter is most famous for his water colours but included in this exhibition are 14 oil canvases. Paresh has studied art in both Calcutta and Delhi. His work has even been on display at the British Museum in London. Paresh has won a whole host of awards in his short career, including Russia's Gold Medal.

The theme for his Mumbai showing is "Encounters" and about 45 paintings will be on display. The price ranges from Rs 12,000 to Rs 2,000,00.
