Jitendra Kumar in semis

BANGKOK: India's Jitendra Kumar fought off a spirited challenge from Russia's Astrak Hanstev Alexi in the 75 kg middle weight category to sail into the semi-finals of the 22nd King's Cup International Boxing Tournament here on Sunday. Kumar will meet Uzbekistan's Yarbekov Dilshod tomorrow.

Though he was the only Indian to win a bout today, the country's pugilists earned the respect of all for their brave show. In the fly-weight 51 kg division, Srinivas Rao gave Thailand's Somrat Kamsing a run for his money before losing. And in the 48 kg light-fly category, despite good performance, Rajesh Basnet lost to the Thai opponent Pramuansak Phosuan on a 9:1 point decision.

Amandeep Johl fires sub-par round

XIAMEN (CHINA): Amandeep Johl became the only Indian amongst the three in fray to card a sub par round in the tournament as Thailand's rising star Chawalit Plaphol birdied three out of the last four holes to win the $200,000 Orient Masters Golf tournament on Sunday.Calcutta-based Arjun Atwal returned his second successive one over par 73 round to total 295 (74,75,73,73) to move up from 43rd place to 40. Chandigarh-based Johl returned a fine two under par 70 last round to aggregate 297 (74,76,77,70) finishing joint 51st along with compatriot Amritinder Singh.

Jansher in 7th British Open final Birmingham

Jansher Khan kept alive his quest for a seventh successive British Open title after he halted a late revival from Australian Dan Jenson to reach the final. Jansher won 15-9, 15-8, 10-15, 15-10 but needed 68 minutes to achieve it. He also had to find four late winners with brilliant drops and volley drops after Jenson had the crowd roaring by cutting a five-point deficit to one.

Spirlea knocks out Seles, in final

Hilton head Island: Ninth seed Irina Spirlea of Romania ousted third-seeded American Monica Seles 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7-5) in the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament, continuing her mastery of higher seeds at Sea Pines RacquetClub. In the final, Spirlea will meet fourth seed Amanda Coezter.
