Govt plans to give more powers to CAG

NEW DELHI: The Centre proposes to set up a commission to review the Constitution to make the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) a more effective and powerful body, Minister for Human Resource Development Murli Manohar Joshi said today.

The question of jurisdictional limitations of the CAG for audit of public funds is also to be looked into by the commission in depth, he said and added that he personally does not see any reason to put spokes in CAG's jurisdiction to audit public expenditure in any form.

BJP MLAs quit

CHANDIGARH: Two BJP MLAs in Haryana have decided to resign from the state assembly alleging "harassment and humiliation" at the hands of officials. Confirming the receipt of resignation letters from Faridabad MLA Chander Bhatia and his Ballabhgarh counterpart. Meanwhile, a BJP MLA in the Uttar Pradesh also tendered his resignation from the House in protest against what he alleged the Kalyan Singh Government's "indifference"towards his constituency Ghaziabad.

Irish peace deal

BELFAST: The final countdown to Thursday's deadline for a peace deal on Northern Ireland's future begins now, with London and Dublin hoping to present a blueprint settlement to negotiators tomorrow. Despite crucial differences remaining between Republican and Unionist political leaders on the key issue of a North-South body linking Ulster and the Irish republic, the British and Irish Governments are optimistic that a peace agreement will be signed on April 9.

Iran landslide

TEHRAN: All 50 residents of a village are feared to have been buried alive in a landslide in south-west Iran. Iranian television reported that a mountain village with 50 inhabitants in Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiari province was buried under a landslide caused by flood waters.

UP villagers clash

LUCKNOW: Three persons were shot dead in a clash between residents of two villages in Allahabad district today. The incident occurred at Mahesh villageunder Lalapur police station when residents of two villages clashed over a petty issue.
