Screen awards presented

CHENNAI, April 6: A glitzy evening, with all the vibrant ingredients -- glamour, colour and verve -- thrown in, marked the Screen-Videocon film award presentation held in Chennai on Sunday.

The highlight of the evening was definitely the father-daughter duo -- veteran actor Gemini Ganesan and the beautiful Rekha. It was indeed a touching moment when the father received the Screen-Videocon's `Lifetime Achievement Award' from the daughter. Malayalam actress Sheela of `Chemeen' fame also received the `Lifetime' award.

Earlier, thespian and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, Sivaji Ganesan, was felicitated by the organisers for his achievements in the field. Actors Sharat Kumar, Chiranjeevi and Ramesh Arvind received their awards from Sridevi and Boney. Malayalam actor Mohanlal could not be present.

The best actress awards went to Suhasini (Kannada), Meena (Tamil), Manju Warrier (Malayalam) and Vijayashanthi (Telugu) -- handed over by actor Arjun. Suhasini's husband, director Mani Ratnam, was notpresent.

Director K Balachander received an award for his `pioneering' contribution to television. A R Rehman received applause when he sang his `Vande Mataram' number. For the first time, Screen introduced an award for the `Non-film music segment' taking note of the increasing popularity of pop albums. The petite Anooradha Shriram won an award for her pop album `I am a modern ponnu'.
