TN govt considers taking over Dunlop Ambattur unit

CHENNAI, April 10: The government of Tamil Nadu will consider taking over the Ambattur factory premises of beleagured tyre company Dunlop India Ltd, according to labour leaders.

At a meeting with representatives of the Dunlop workers union, Tamil Nadu labour minister Rahman Khan reportedly assured the employees union that the matter would be taken up for discussion at the cabinet level and a decision on the possibility of taking over the unit temporarily, a la West Bengal, will be considered.

Dunlop Employees' Union president Kumaraswamy said the minister had said that he would put the case before the chief minister at the earliest possible and has urged the union to formally submit a proposal to this effect to the labour secretary of the TN government on April 13.

Another meeting is scheduled to take place between the Union representatives and the minister on April 17, Kumaraswamy said. By then the government would have also taken legal opinion on the issue, the minister said.
