NEW DELHI, April 10: Adopting a humane approach, the Supreme Court has come to rescue of a newly wed couple from the alleged harassment by Chandigarh police and enraged father of the girl.Disposing a petition within two days of its filing, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice M M Punchhi, Justice K T Thomas and Justice K Rajendra Babu recently ordered that they would not be harassed by Chandigarh police.
The Supreme Court directive came in the wake of an assurance by standing counsel Kamini Jayswal that Chandigarh police would not take any action against the newly married couple.
The court was hearing a Habeas Corpus writ petition filed by Gagan Mehar and and her husband Gaurav Likha alleging that Chandigarh police had illegally detained Gaurav's parents on a complaint of kidnapping lodged by girl's father Manjit Singh and that they were apprehending harassment from the police.
Gaurav's parents, who were present in the court, were released on bail by a sessions judge after the March 31 apexcourt order directing the inspector general of police of the union territory to produce them before it. The petition moved through counsel O P Saxena and Ravinder Aggarwal claimed that the couple got married at Arya Samaj Mandir here on March 29 on their will and sought the court's direction to Chandigarh police not to harass them.
