  India to go in for a spy satellite: Sareen
Air Force Chief S K Sareen said that India's answer to Ghauri is Prithvi, which is incidentally the star attraction at the defence exhibition. He further said that at present India is using satellite images from `friendly countries' to ascertain the range and capabilities of Ghauri. To offset this problem in the future, India will shortly go in for an indigenous military reconnaissance satellite, he declared.
  24 Indians dead in Haj tragedy
Embassy officials camping at Mecca began the process of identifying 24 Indians among the pilgrims killed in the stampede during "stoning the devil" ritual at Mina, 10 km from the holy Mecca city. Of the 24, 13 were men and 11 women and that not many Indians were injured in the stampede which claimed the lives of at least 150 Muslim pilgrims, mostly elderly and sick.

Sharif, Vajpayee may meet in Colombo
Pakistan Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan has hinted at a possible meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart, Atal Behari Vajpayee, during the SAARC summit at Colombo in mid July, but ruled out any possibility of official talks before that. The Pakistan Foreign Minister also expressed his apprehensions about a dialogue after keeping Kashmir aside.

Abolish population-based quota system for Army jobs: Badal
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal demanded that the population-based quota system of recruitment to the defence forces should be immediately abolished and merit made the sole criterion instead. Badal urged Defence Minister George Fernandes to intervene personally to get this long standing grievance of Punjab resolved in "national interest".
Duma rejects Yeltsin nominee for premier
In a major blow for President Boris Yeltsin, Russia's Lower House Duma rejected his nominee Sergei Kiriyenko as the country's next Prime Minister, but the President immediately re-nominated him for the post. The Communist-dominated 450-member House, which had earlier opposed 35-year-old Kiriyenko's candidature on the grounds of his "relative inexperience", rejected the motion by 186-143 votes.
