March 13: Water supply in several parts of the city was affected after the valve of a main pipeline burst on the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli (East) on Sunday evening.Eyewitnesses informed that the incident occurred at around 6.45 pm on the site where the work on constructing a highway is under way. Water rushing out converged into a giant fountain, rising even higher than the buildings in its vicinity, they said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) executive hydraulic engineer N H Kusnur informed that wards such as F South (Parel, Lalbaug, Kalachowkie) and F North (Wadala, Dadar, Sewree, Matunga), M East (Shivaji Nagar, Bainganwadi), E Ward (Byculla, Mazagaon) and Dharavi were affected by the pipeline burst. ``Highway excavation work is in progress. The repairs were carried out last night itself. Restricted supply of water was made available to these areas,'' Kusnur said, adding that the problem had been rectified and there would be no repeat of today's situation.
