Israel promises to make peace with neighbours

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
WASHINGTON, April 13: Israel may still make peace with its Palestinian neighbours, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, adding that he hoped it would come soon. ``If Arafat accepts my offer to negotiate a permanent settlement, we could have a historic breakthrough,'' he told Newsweek magazine. ``We have begun to complete a circle of peace, with Egypt and Jordan and soon with the Palestinians and the Syrians and the Lebanese,'' he said.

Requesting security from terror attacks and the elimination of clauses in the Palestine Liberation Organization charter which call for the destruction of Israel, he said, ``US must recognize our need to determine security needs and the area from which we will withdraw.''
