Mary Pierce fulfills pledge with title
The more Mary Pierce struggled, the more determined she became to win the Bausch and Lomb Championships. Erratic in dropping the opening set of the final in the $450,000 women's clay court tennis tournament, Pierce bounced back to dominate Conchita Martinez 6-7 (8-10), 6-0, 6-2 and win her second title this season.
  O'Meara is the new Master
Mark O'Meara has scratched his name off the list of great golfers who have never won a major championship, winning the Masters a year after his close friend, Tiger Woods, dominated the tournament. O'Meara's victory was nearly overshadowed by the performance of 58-year-old Jack Nicklaus, who thrilled fans at Augusta National Golf Club as he made a run at his seventh Masters title.

Mansher rallies to shoot gold
Mansher Singh has by now developed a habit of first putting himself in an awkward situation and then finding a way out of it. Monday was another such occasion when he found himself in a tight spot when Punjab's Zorawar Singh Sandhu shot 25 out of 25 in the final to tie the score at 130-all in the 41st National Shooting Championship of the trap event at the Dr Karni Singh Range.
Lankans beat S Africa
Sri Lanka beat South Africa by six wickets in the triangular one-day series at St George's Park yesterday. Set a target of 232 to win, an unbeaten fifth wicket stand between skipper Arjuna Ranatunga (93 n.o.) and Roshan Mahanama (46n.o.) saw the visitors reach the total with over three overs to spare.

Azhar hopes to script a winning tale
India and Australia will enter the Ferozeshah Kotla for the final of the Pepsi tri-nation one-day series in different moods. While Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin will present a confident look having won all four league games, his counterpart Steve Waugh, the poker-face notwithstanding, is a worried man.
Fazaluddin forges past an erring Sandeep Kirtane
The match-up between the two Indian wild cards -- Syed Fazaluddin and Sandeep Kirtane -- may not go down as one of those classic grass court matches. It was all about who made fewer errors and Sandeep, after a tight first-set tie breaker, withered away in the heat and his seemingly inability to get on top of the big points, to go out in the first round of the IPCL Cup Challenger at the IPCL Complex.
