India determined for success

KSR MENON
SHARJAH, April 16: Stung by an unexpected reverse at home against the struggling Australians, India go into the Sharjah Coca-Cola Cup tri-series determined to wipe out a nightmare they lived on their last trip to this cricket outpost in the desert.

Both India and Australia will have to do some quick adjustments shifting from day matches to playing under lights and with white balls against the Kiwis.

India have time and again left Sharjah on a bitter note. But victories in recent matches holds much hope for them.

Coach Anshuman Gaekwad expressed confidence. ``The boys are waiting to do better than last time here,'' he said on the team's arrival at the Dubai International Airport late last night.

``One defeat does not determine the overall fate of a side. They have been together as a team for some time now and that has been working,'' Gaekwad said.

In fact, India does have reasons to relish as they have been blending well as a team during the last few games. They did very well in winning all the tiesin the preliminary rounds of the triangular tournament in India.

Skipper Azharuddin was also in an upbeat mood about the side. ``We have been playing good cricket and we hope to continue that way,'' he said.

The team preferred to have just a light work-out in the evening to get a feel of the conditions.

New Zealand, under skipper Stephen Fleming, have become a performing unit after former Australian wicket-keeper Steve Rixon took over as the team's coach. What they lack is consistency in batting which has seen them fritter away matches from winning positions.

Former Indian stars Pankaj Roy, Brijesh Patel and Shivlal Yadav are the beneficiaries this year.
