NEW DELHI, April 16: It was one of the most stunning opening rounds in the history of Asian PGA Golf tour. As many as 76 players had sub-par cards and another 21 players had par scores in the first round of the China Volvo Open at the Sunisland Golf Club just outside Shanghai, according to information reaching here.Six players shared the lead with six under par cards of 66 each, while nine others shot five under 67 and a dozen others shot 68.
Indian Open champion and the leader on the APGA order of Merit, Firoz Ali, returned a three-under 69, as did his fellow Indian, Arjun Singh. Arjun Atwal carded two under, while two other Indians, Vivek Bhandari and Amritinder Singh were one under. Jyoti Randhawa shot a par round.
The six-man lead group comprises two Australians John Senden and Leith Wastle, Korea's Anthony Kang, South Africa's Nico Van Rensburg, Taiwan's Lin Keng-chi, the winner of the Omega Order of Merit in 1995, and American Eric Meeks.
The wide fairways and short rough allowed the players toattack the course and the par fives in particular were much relished by the player. Rensburg, who barely had time to practice on the course birdied each of the four par fives.
