HYDERABAD, April 16: Twenty-seven Opposition members were suspended from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for the day today as bedlam and pandemonium prevailed over the series of incidents of rape and murder involving the police.Of the suspended MLAs, 24 belonged to the Congress, including four associated members, while two were from MIM and one from the MBT.
As soon as the House met at 9 am, the Opposition protested against the ``unsatisfactory'' reply given by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to the House yesterday when asked about the police `torture' issue. They also alleged that they were denied the opportunity to seek clarifications, especially as panel Speaker P Chandrasekhar had abruptly adjourned the House.
Today, when Speaker Y Ramakrishnudu rejected the plea to reopen the discussion, several members trooped into the well of the House and squatted on the steps near the podium disrupting the proceedings. For the second consecutive day, question hour was not taken up and the Speaker announced thatall questions were deemed to have been answered.
The entire Opposition then mounted an attack on the Government for not allowing a thorough discussion on the law and order situation in the state.
After futile attempts to restore order, the Speaker asked Legislature Affairs Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju to move a resolution for suspending the members. Besides Congress MLAs, MIM members Asaduddin Owaisi and Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and MBT member Mohd Amanullah Khan were suspended.
As the members refused to leave the House, marshals were called in to take them out. Congress members T Jeevan Reddy and D Nagender picked up a quarrel with the marshals but ultimately they were physically lifted out. And even as the marshals tried to grapple with the members, they raised slogans denouncing the Government.
After the suspended MLAs were taken out, members of the CPI, CPM and NTR-TDP staged a walk out from the House protesting against the Government's refusal to reply to the clarifications sought by Oppositionparties on the chief minister's statement. They accused the ruling party of being responsible for today's incidents in the House.
As the entire Opposition was united on the issue, the treasury benches were left to defend themselves. Even BJP leader Baddam Bal Reddy said that the panel speaker should not have abruptly adjourned the House yesterday and suggested that the members be allowed to seek clarifications.
Congress leader P Janardhan Reddy said that the statements given by Home Minister A Madhava Reddy yesterday were full of inaccuracies and contradictions. ``We must be given a chance to clarify our doubts,'' he demanded. However, Ramakrishnudu justified the panel speaker's action stating that adjournment of the House was the prerogative of the Chair.
