NEW DELHI, April 16: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today charged the BJP-led government with violating the spirit of the Constitution by ``forcible'' removal of Governors. The CPM politburo said the BJP was using the office of the Governor to serve its political ends. In a separate statement former home minister Indrajit Gupta also questioned the new government's move.
The CPM statement said the government was ``insincere'' to the ruling coalition's National Agenda, which promised that the Governors' appointment and tenure would be decided in consultation with the state governments.
Similarly, the Presidential address had assured the joint session of Parliament that the institution of Governor would not be politicised.
Besides, the government had ``insulted the high office of the Governor'' and by inference, the President and the Constitution, by forcible removal of three Governors and two Lieutenant Governors well before their tenure ended, it said.
The Governors of Goa, Mizoram andGujarat and the Lieutenant Governors of Pondicherry, Delhi and the Andaman and Nicobar islands resigned at the Centre's suggestion.
Home Minister L K Advani has also announced that new Governors will be appointed in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Maharashtra as the term of the incumbents had expired.
In his statement Indrajit Gupta questioned Advani's objection to the appointment of Governors of Mizoram by a ``caretaker'' United Front government.
