Jethmalani, Hegde take on Jaya

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, April 16: A war of words today erupted over AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha's demand for the removal of ministers against whom FERA cases and charge-sheets have been filed with ministers Ram Jethmalani and Ramakrishna Hegde making a veiled attack on her and Vazhappady Ramamurthy asking them to ``shut their mouth''. Jethmalani, who addressed a rally in Bangalore organised by Hegde's Lok Shakti party, deplored attempts to `endanger' the Vajpayee government saying ``small pinpricks'' were being given from ``some unfortunate quarters''. Without naming Jayalalitha, he said ``some people, when they come out of jail, become humble, chastened and responsible. Some others, when they emerge out of jail, become arrogant and irresponsible and can't distinguish between right and wrong.'' In his speech, Hegde said attempts to administer pinpricks to the government would not not succeed. ``If anyone tries to destabilise the government, posterity and people will not not forgive them,'' he said. Reacting to theirremarks, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Vazhappady Ramamurthy, justified Jayalalitha's demand and said it was ``absolutely unwarranted and unethical'' on the part of Hegde and Jethmalani to criticise her.

Ramamurthy said Jayalalitha had a real grievance as she had voluntarily asked R Muthiah to resign in the wake of a special court framing charges against him in a corruption case and expected that the same yardstick would be followed in the case of two or three Central ministers ``who fall in this category''. He did not not name them.

Ramamurthy said those aggrieved by the statement of Jayalalitha naturally have come out against her ``out of desperation''.

``My humble suggestion to them is let these ministers shut their mouth and let the leaders of coalition parties talk the matter over and thrash out issues,'' he said. Meanwhile, Jayalalitha got support for her demand from unexpected quarters when former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said all chargesheeted Central ministers shouldresign. Without naming Sukh Ram, a minister in the BJP-led government in his state, Singh demanded that chargesheeted ministers in Himachal Pradesh should also resign or be removed.
