EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
APRIL 16: A witness in the Ramabai Nagar incident today told the Gundewar Commission that some members of the rampaging mob entered the BEST bus he was driving and forced the passengers to alight. Namdev Kondiba Shinde, a BEST bus driver, said during examination-in-chief by Mumbai police counsel Ujjwal Nikam that the traffic on the Eastern Express highway was brought to a halt on July 11, 1997, at around 7.20 am. Shinde had to stop his bus after he noticed a huge mob on the road pelting stones at passing vehicles. He said the mob began pelting stones at his bus too forcing him to get out. They later also forced the passengers in the bus to alight, Shinde said adding that the scared travellers started running away. Some from the mob then damaged the bus by pelting stones at it and then poured kerosene on the tyres, Shinde said. He then saw something burning after the mob had alighted from the bus and two persons then rushed into the bus and removed burning cotton pieces that were thrown by the mob. Thedriver said that the mob pushed a motor-cyclist and damaged the two-wheeler. The mob then advanced towards Kamraj Nagar, damaging vehicles on way, turning turtle a 118 NE car behind the bus and also set fire to some vehicles. Later, Shinde saw thick black smoke coming from the direction of Kamraj Nagar on the highway accompanied by sounds of crackers. Thereafter no mob was seen. Shinde said he found the seat next to the rear door burnt and three plastic kerosene cans. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
