NEW DELHI, APRIL 16: Former Lok Sabha deputy speaker Suraj Bhan and former director general of police Julio F Rebeiro are understood to be figuring in the list of six Governors whose names have been recommended by government to President K R Narayanan today.Former bureaucrat Vijay Kapoor, who is tipped to become Lt Governor of national capital territory of Delhi, is among the two Lt Governors to be appointed, sources said.
Bhan is tipped to succeed Romesh Bhandari who resigned after a controversial tenure in Uttar Pradesh soon after Atal Behari Vajpayee was sworn in as Prime Minister last month.
Among the names proposed is Bhai Mahavir, a veteran BJP leader who has been a member of its national executive. The other names understood to have been recommended are retired General J F R Jacob and senior BJP leader Sunder Singh Bhandari.Besides Uttar Pradesh, the Governors posts are vacant in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra where the tenure of incumbents hasended.
Vacancies have also arisen with the resignation of Governors in Goa, Mizoram, Gujarat and Lt Governor in Andaman and Nicobar islands.The announcement about the gubernatorial appointments promised by Vajapyee yesterday failed to come until late tonight, indicating that there was no unanimity yet on the selection of appointees.
The Home Ministry had forwarded names of eight people to be appointed Governors and Lt Governors, but the Prime Minister's Office could not clear the names to be forwarded to Rashtrapati Bhavan until late tonight.Sources in Rashtrapati Bhawan said they were expecting the list of Governors especially after the prime minister's statement to newsmen that the first list would be announced today.
Meanwhile, in a significant development Home Minister L K Advani reportedly assured West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu that he will wait for the meeting between the two on Saturday before the government decides on the new Governor for the State.
Advani spoke to Basu over telephoneafter the chief minister yesterday insisted that he be consulted on the issue before the appointment.
