DMK will bounce back even if dismissed: CM

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, APRIL 16: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday declared that the DMK would recapture power in Tamil Nadu even if the present government was dismissed by the Centre.

Apparently referring to AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha, who had been repeatedly seeking the dismissal of the DMK regime using Article 356 (empowering the Centre to dismiss a State Government) of the Constitution, the CM said ``they are eager and anxious to capture power after dislodging the DMK regime which is providing a peaceful rule in Tamil Nadu. Even if they succeed in their attempt, it is the DMK which is going to recapture power.''

``I do not know why the Centre had sent the team. Despite that, the government activities would be transparent and I have directed the Chief Secretary to provide all the information to the Central team,'' he added. The CM, who was replying to a special calling attention motion in the Assembly on the visit of the Central team to Tamil Nadu to study the law and order situation, referred to the AIADMK'sdecision to send one lakh telegrams to the Centre seeking the dismissal of the DMK rule, and retorted: ``Prime Minister A B Vajpayee or Union Home Minister L K Advani or others (in the BJP regime) would not get hoodwinked by telegrams. Even we could give one crore telegrams on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu for the continuation of the DMK regime.''

During an emotional speech, which lasted nearly 15 minutes, the CM quoted the Union Special Secretary for Home (who was in Chennai) of stating that Chennai residents moved without any sort of panic when he visited Marina on Thursday for a morning walk.

``After seeing this statement, some persons may intimidate people and then send telegrams to the Prime Minister stating that the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu had deteriorated.''

Referring to Jayalalitha's statement that the days of the DMK regime were numbered, he retorted: ``I am not bothered even if the days of my life are numbered. So, I am not worried if somebody says that the days of the DMKregime are numbered. It is not necessary that one would get a sense of pride and status only when he occupies a post. There are people who earned fame by serving people even if they did not occupy any post. Hence, I am not bothered about these things.''

His main concern was that by letting out such threats and intimidations (seeking the dismissal of the government), the `peace' of the democratically elected DMK regime was disturbed besides preventing the people from enjoying the benefits of various schemes implemented by the government.

Stating that Vajpayee and Advani had firmly stated that the Centre would not invoke Article 356 against the Tamil Nadu government, Karunanidhi remarked that some people here (AIADMK and its allies) had become `tired' of seeking the dismissal of the DMK regime.
