MUMBAI, April 16: In the battle of bankmen, Union Bank overpowered Central Bank 3-1 (half-time 1-0) in a Bombay Hockey Association Senior Division match at the Mahindra Stadium today.Union Bank completed their engagements with eight points which brought them promotion to the Super League.
Rajesh Matkari, Union Bank's sharp-shooting forward scored twice today with Balbinder Singh adding another.
Matkari struck the first of his goals in the 8th minute, scoring on the second attempt after a sparkling run.
Grabbing a cross by G Prakash, Matkari dribbled past two defenders and scooped into goal after his first try was blocked by Central Bank's Douglas Rodrigues.
Balbinder swelled the lead in the 37th minute with a rasping drive past the goalkeeper.
Matkari scored again in the 41st minute, this time with a sharp deflection.Central Bank pulled one back through a penalty-stroke converted by Wendel Gomes.
Bird on a high
Bombay Republicans edged Catholic Gymkhana 9-7 via tie-breaker (full time6-6) with Aldrin Bird scoring all six goals for Republicans in the quarter-finals of the Bandra Gymkhana rink hockey tournament at the Gymkhana floodlit courts on Wednesday.
Ryan Alphonso (4), Charleston Lobo and Valley Picardo scored for Catholic Gymkhana during regulation time.
In the tie-breaker, Bird, Joseph Anthony and Eves Bent found the boards while Patrick Amaral was the only scorer for the losers.
Tata Sports Club defeated Reserve Bank of India 8-1 to enter the semi-finals.
Two goals in the very first minute by Blaise Monteiro had the match sealed for Tatas. The other scorers were Amjad Khan (3), Weldon Miranda (2) and Raju Bagade.
Young Sports beat Central Bank of India 8-7 in a tie-breaker. The match was 4-4 at the end of regulation time.
C S Patil (2), Prakash Sakpal and Pravin D'Souza scored for Young Sports and Ashley Piedade (2), Brian D'Souza and Romell Pereira got the Central Bank goals.
In the tie-breaker, Patil, Sakpal, David Alexander and Abdul Shahid were the scorers for YSwhile Vivek D'Souza, Wendell Gomes were the scorers for CB.
