  No shadow of death on DMK
The relentless campaign by AIADMK and its allies for dismissal of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu mainly on the issue of law and order yesterday received a setback with a Central team saying the state government was quite in control of the situation. This is the second setback for the AIAIDMK chief Jayalalitha, coming as it does after Prme Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's stony silence on her demand for ouster all the Central ministers who are chargesheeted.
  Mahajan takes oath, and now everything's official about him
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday moved to silence critics within his party and outside by attempting to legitimise his controversial appointment of Pramod Mahajan as political advisor in the PMO with an oath of office and secrecy. The oaths were administered by Vajpayee himself at an unusual ceremony at Race Course Road.

Bill ready for new state in UP hills
In keeping with its promise made in its national agenda to constitute the Uttaranchal state, the BJP-led government is ready to introduce the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, 1998, in the next session. The Bill has been cleared by the Union Ministries of Home, Law, Finance, Personnel, Environment and Forests as well as the Planning Commission.
Munde made Rs 200 crore in irrigation deals, alleges Oppn
Allegations and counter allegations flew thick and fast during the marathon debate on budgetary demands of the irrigation, cooperation, industries, labour and energy departments in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly yesterday. The Congress-led Opposition alleged that kickbacks amounting to Rs 200 crore were pocketed while awarding contracts worth Rs 2,000 crore when Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde held additional charge of the irrigation department.

Opposition shown the door in Andhra House
Twenty-seven Opposition members were suspended from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for the day yesterday as bedlam and pandemonium prevailed over the series of incidents of rape and murder involving the police. Of the suspended MLAs, 24 belonged to the Congress, including four associated members, while two were from MIM and one from the MBT.
