  Jethmalani, Hegde take on Jaya
A war of words erupted over AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha's demand for the removal of ministers against whom FERA cases and charge-sheets have been filed with ministers Ram Jethmalani and Ramakrishna Hegde making a veiled attack on her and Vazhappady Ramamurthy asking them to "shut their mouth" yesterday. Jethmalani addressing a rally in Bangalore organised by Hegde's Lok Shakti party, deplored attempts to `endanger' the Vajpayee government saying "small pinpricks" were being given from "some unfortunate quarters".
  V P Singh signed Bofors LoI: CBI
Former Prime Minister V P Singh was one of the signatories to the letter of intent (LoI) issued to the Swedish Bofors company for supply of four hundred 155 mm Howitzer guns in his capacity as finance minister during the regime of late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. An affidavit to this effect has been filed by the CBI before the Delhi high court on April 13.

Post-poll rout, BJP to settle intra-party rows
With the last few days marked by open squabbling among Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, hectic efforts are now on to mend things in the state unit. While the top leadership of the state BJP remained busy with meetings and parleys, some of the MLAs who had demanded incentives to partymen by way of appointments to boards and corporations met Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat yesterday morning.
Gowda gearing up for `Operation topple Patel'
Just when the Janata Dal leadership is pulling out all stops to rev up party from village level, the camp of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda has revived moves to topple the two-year-old J H Patel government. The Gowda camp is said to be a hub of hectic political activities especially after the Chief Minister and Janata Dal state president B L Shankar assumed centrestage in strengthening the party.

Bhan, Rebeiro may be new Governors
Former Lok Sabha deputy speaker Suraj Bhan and former director general of police Julio F Rebeiro are understood to be figuring in the list of six Governors whose names have been recommended by the government to President K R Narayanan. Former bureaucrat Vijay Kapoor, who is tipped to become Lt Governor of national capital territory of Delhi, is among the two Lt Governors to be appointed.
Munde made Rs 200 crore in irrigation deals, alleges Oppn
Allegations and counter allegations flew thick and fast during the marathon debate on budgetary demands of the irrigation, cooperation, industries, labour and energy departments in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly yesterday. The Congress-led Opposition alleged that kickbacks amounting to Rs 200 crore were pocketed while awarding contracts worth Rs 2,000 crore when Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde held additional charge of the irrigation department.
