Dhobi paid for being featured in US tea ad
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, April 18: Shyam Lal, an 80-year-old dhobi, was given a cheque of Rs 19,000 by the US-based Tazo Tea Company for `accidentally' featuring in their advertisement. But he cannot encash it yet as he does not have a bank account. ``I don't know which bank to go to. Maybe, the one that has an office in Chandni Chowk.'' Shyam Lal has a make-shift shop in the Spice Market near Chandni Chowk. He spreads a cloth on the floor and irons clothes there. The spice in the air makes him cough. Between sips of tea, he tells his tale. ``I've got all my six daughters married. I am in debt of almost a lakh. I spent about Rs 15,000 for each wedding. The money I have received will be used to pay off part of the debt,'' he said. Two years ago, an American tourist clicked Shyam Lal while he was having tea. The photo found its way into a Tazo tea advertisement in the US and the president of the firm has now decided to pay him the fee -- $ 500 i.e Rs 19,000. Shyam Lal does not remember when the photographer clicked hispicture. But he likes the media attention that is suddenly being showered upon him. ``I heard that my picture is out in the newspapers. But I have not been able to buy the paper yet, '' he said. He has grabbed the attention of people who never noticed him in the Spice Market. He has also learnt to pose for photographers. Shyam Lal has worked hard all his life. Though his bones protrude from his sagging skin and he cannot walk fast, he says he isn't tired yet. ``I have bought a stereo, a bed and many steel utensils with my earnings. I have bought Shamo (his wife) silver trinkets. I don't know whether my family is happy with me but I have done my best.'' Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
