Pavel, Black set up summit clash

TOKYO, April 18: Romanian Andri Pavel cooled off the hot streak of Jan-Michael Gambill with some heavy hitting and deft volleys today, advancing to the final of the Japan Open with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.Pavel, seeded 16th, will meet Zimbabwe's Byron Black, the 10th seed, in tomorrow's championship match.

Black reached his second final in two weeks by outmanoeuvering No. 12 Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic, winning seven games in a row from 2-3 in the first set on his way to a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

In the women's semifinals, fifth seed Corina Morariu came back from a night of abdominal pains and hospital tests, rebounded from 0-4 in the second set and beat No. 4 Amy Frazier 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

For the title, she faces top seed and defending champion Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who beat No. 6 seed Wang Shi-Ting of Taiwan 6-3, 6-2.

Gaudenzi in semifinals
BARCELONA: Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy defeated two-time former French Open champion Sergi Bruguera 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 yesterday to enter the semifinals of theBarcelona ATP tournament.

Today Gaudenzi will meet Todd Martin of the United States, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Carlos Costa of Spain.

Spain's Alberto Berasategui and Carlos Moya will play the other semifinal. Berasategui beat Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 6-4, 6-4 and Moya defeated Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Martin in last-four
BARCELONA: Todd Martin ignored the crowd support for his Spanish opponent and defeated Carlos Costa 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and ten minutes to move into the semifinals of the Conde de Godo tournament yesterday.

Another non-Spaniard made the semifinal when Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy beat Sergi Bruguera of Spain 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Alberto Berasategui eliminated No 1 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted only an hour.

Fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya advanced by beating Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Martin, one of the only two US players into the tournament, was able to play his favorite game against Costa, strong serves andapproaching the net.Gaudenzi's will play Martin in today's semifinal, and the American likes his chances.

Fang Li advances
MAKARASKA (CROATIA): Top-seeded Fang Li of China cruised into the semifinals of the $ 107,500 Makarska Ladies Open by defeating Paola Suarez of Argentina 6-4, 6-2 yesterday.

Fang will face Gala Leon Garcia, who ousted her Spanish compatriot Ana Alcazar, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-1. It will be the first WTA semifinal in Leon Garcia's carrier. She is No 59th on the WTA rankings.

Also advancing to the semifinals was a qualifier, Kvetoslava Hrdlickova of Czech Republic, who defeated Olga Lugina of Ukraine, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Hrdlickova, ranked No 140, had upset second-seeded Croat tennis star Mirjana Lucic in the second round Thursday.

Hrdlickova will face fellow Czech Lenka Nemeckova, who defeated Sandra Kloesel of Germany, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-0. Nemeckova is ranked No 96.
