Indian Gymkhana in last four

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 18: Hosts Indian Gymkhana girls beat Satara English Medium School (Satara) 11-5 to enter the semi-finals of the Colgate-Palmolive-sponsored 8th D B Prabhu Memorial Open State-level sub-junior (under-13 years) basketball tournament, today.

The Satara team have to beat Abhyudaya to enter the semi-finals from Group A.

Both the teams concentrated on defence resulting in a very low scoring match. Gymkhana had a lead of three points, thanks to a surprising basket by Samyukta R and a free throw by captain Reena B.

In the second quarter, Bhagyashree Gujar scored a basket to cut down the lead but before the breather Gymkhana made the score 5-3 through a drive in shot by Deepa N.

In the third quarter, the Satara girls fought gallantly and their man-to-man marking made things difficult for the hosts. With Reena and Annoda sitting out, Gymkhana tried to kill the time waiting for the fourth quarter.

Bhagyashree scored again to level the score 5-5 in the third quarter.

But once Reena entered thecourt, it was altogether a different story. The tall Reena collected all the rebounds, dribbled past her opponents and scored two baskets. She gave a nice pass to Annoda under the basket to win the match by 11-5 points.

In a boys Group A tie, Satara were thrashed by a speedy Nagpada Neighbourhood House (NNH) 67-6. This was Satara's second consecutive loss and they are out of the running with still a match in hand against Central YMCA. NNH and Indian Gymkhana with two victories each have entered the knock-out stage from this group.

In a boys Group B match, HAL (Nashik) beat Abhyudaya 84-7, while in a girls Group A match Fr Agnel's Gymkhana beat St Paul's 20-4. St Paul's are out of the reckoning with this defeat, while Agradneya Vyayam Shala and Fr Agnel's have qualified for the semis.

Results: Boys -- HAL Nashik 84 (Malay Khanwalkar 20, Neil Khandekar 12, Kunal Adhikari 12) bt Abhyudaya 7 (Rahul Bhangala 5) (Ht: 44-0). Girls Group A: Fr Agnel's Gym 20 (Mithila 10) bt St Paul's 4 .
