  The case for conscription
India's armed forces are in the same quandary. The defence budget has stagnated for ten years. After allowing for inflation it has declined steadily. Manpower and maintenance costs have escalated. The Fifth Pay Commission has added to the burden.
Gill apart, it's all the same
On May 6, when the Prasar Bharati Ordinance lapses, will Doordarshan and All India Radio be back to the dark era Before Gill (B.G.)? Or will we continue to breathe the sweet, fresh air of liberty After Gill (A.G.)? The BJP believes that the only way to usher in autonomy, a post-emergency concept dear to their leader Lal Krishna Advani's heart, is to remove Surrindar Singh Gill. "This diseased insect"
This country has suffered many a misfortune but none greater than the vice and persistence in our public life of a despicable character called Subramanian Swamy. His has been a life of character assassination, malicious mendacity and sordid blackmail of any one who happens to cross his path.

And if he can't perform to specifications either, possibly Inspector Ghote will have to be sent down to scour Tamil Nadu and locate its elusive law and order problem.
The friendship farce
There is nothing more farcical than the diplomatic exchange programme. It is claimed that only artists can strengthen ties between India and Pakistan. The Gujral doctrine is out, culture dogma is in. But how do you explain this facade of friendship to the families of Army personnel killed in the Valley and to those villagers on the border who spend their lives in constant fear?
