India pins high hopes on SAARC ministers meet

DHAKA, April 24: India today expressed hope that the first meeting of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Information Ministers, beginning here tomorrow, would go a long way towards strengthening regional cooperation and various exchanges between the member nations.

``We would be able to reach an understanding to show the neighbouring countries in good light and strengthen the various ties among the SAARC countries,'' Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

She said the Information Ministry had got a significant role in projecting ``whatever understanding we have reached in other fora of SAARC.''Replying to a question, Swaraj, the first Minister of the Vajpayee government to visit Bangladesh, said she had brought ``goodwill of my country and the people for peace and prosperity of people of Bangladesh.''

The four-member Indian delegation includes secretary to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, P G Mankad. Pakistan Information Minister Mushahid Hussainarrived here with a nine-member delegation.

The meeting aims at formulating ``a regional outlook based on shared vision, common interest and mutual benefit of the people in the region.'' SAARC secretary-general Nayeen U Hasan said the Dhaka meeting was significant as it was a part of the process to upgrade the level of co-operation in the region. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives are the seven members of SAARC.
