Industry gearing up for DLD

NAVIKA KUMAR
New Delhi, April 24: Even as the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) gears up to review the ending of its monopoly in the field of domestic long distance (DLD) telephony, the industry is getting ready to put forth their demands on the subject.

At a meeting of the National Telecom Committee under the aegis of the Confedration of Indian Industry (CII) held here yesterday, a special committee for preparing the industry inputs was set up under the chairmanship of former MTNL chief general Manager B M Khanna.

India had made a commitment at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to review opening up of its DLD to private players by 1999. The international long distance (ILD), so far a Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) monopoly, is scheduled to come up for review in 2004.

The mandate for the CII committee will be to chalk out an interactive programme with the DoT and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the actual implementation of privatisation in this segment.
