Corporator detained under MPDA Act

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, April 24: The Mumbai police have detained an independent corporator Austin Marcos Gracious (49) from Malwani (ward no 135) in Malad west today under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords and Bootleggers Act (MPDA). The additional commissioner of police, north-west region who ordered the detention said, ``He was a notorious person and had a long list of cases against him. Over 20 cases of all kinds forced us to detain him.'' Said the Malwani police, the corporator has been sent to Nashik jail. Gracious had a dubious past, including detention under the NSA and externment for four times by the Malwani police. Besides, he was involved in 30 cases of extortion, attempt to murder and drug trafficking.

Interestingly, while the police claimed that Gracious was absconding for the last six months, he had come to BMC to cast his vote in the elections to the two seats from the corporation to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

Gracious had become popular for several civicdevelopmental works in Marve and Malwani villages sponsored from his corporator's fund. He absented himself from civic general body meetings and maintained a low profile. If the statutory board ratifies his detention he will serve a one-year jail term.
