GAUTAM BUDDHA NAGAR, April 24: A major fire broke out in a two-storeyed production unit of Onida washing machines in Phase II this morning. According to initial estimates, the losses crossed Rs 70 crore. At least 3,000 washing machines were destroyed in the blaze along with other property.
It took 12 fire tenders almost 8 hours to douse the fire. No casualty has been reported. The fire, which is suspected to have begun in the basement, was detected at around 6.30 a.m. by the unit's security staff. Fire tenders from Sahibabad and Delhi were rushed to the spot.
Highly inflammable plastic components of washing machines were stored in the basement and that made the fire personnel's task difficult. The fire on the first floor was brought under control by 11 a.m. Police officials have said that a short-circuit caused the blaze.
